projects Toward Chiaravalle’s UNESCO candidacy project

BIA in collaboration with Bocconi University of Milan is overseeing the realization of a pre-feasibility study aimed at exploring the possibility of including the Chiaravalle Area in the UNESCO Tentative List.

The Abbey and the Chiaravalle Area constitute a millennial territorial system located within the South Milan Agricultural Park. They include not only the Abbey and Borgo di Chiaravalle, but also other places of cultural and environmental interest, such as the Cascina San Giacomo Nocetum, the Milan Nosedo sewage treatment plant with MAF (Museo Acqua Franca), the Vettabbia Park, and the main local farmsteads and cooperatives.

These include Cascina Nosedo, Cascina Casottello, Cascina San Bernardo and the social cooperatives Martinengo, Fabula and Casa per la Pace. These realities, set in the context of the so-called “Valley of the Monks” represent an important cultural and agricultural heritage, which is intended to be enhanced through the UNESCO nomination process.

The main objective of the study carried out by BIA aims to analyze and identify, thanks to a detailed research of the context and the territory, the indispensable characteristics of the Abbey of Chiaravalle, which with its traditions and cultural practices represents, not only a place of worship, but an example of a contemporary city for Milan and the world, a legacy to be transmitted to future generations.

Thanks to the cooperation with a scientific committee composed of a number of authoritative personalities in their area of belonging, at the end of the path it will be possible to identify the mode that can best represent all the historical, cultural and social characteristics and peculiarities of Chiaravalle.

This is an important step to enhance this area and promote its recognition at the international level.
