projects Waiting for Geoweek: opening of the Si.M.Geo project’s season of events
On Saturday, April 12, the event “GeoKids: Walk for young and old to discover the Floristella Mining Park” was held at the Floristella Grottacalda Mining Park.
BIA supported the GAL Rocca di Cerere Geopark in the conception and organization of the day held as part of the Si.M.Geo project, which was a preview of the community building & engagement activities planned for Geoweek, scheduled for the coming months.
In a landscape setting of great historical and naturalistic value, children and families took part in a guided trek inside the open-air museum that once housed one of Sicily’s main sulfur mines.

The real main characters of the day were the children themselves, who, through traditional games and experiential activities led by Ambra Saottini, with the collaboration of Salvatore Chilardi Giuseppe Maria Amato and Valentina Di Natale, involved the adults in discovering the geological and cultural heritage of the site.
The event was also an opportunity to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Floristella’s first mining concession, an anniversary that offered an opportunity to reflect on the value of industrial memory and the importance of passing on knowledge and stories to new generations.
