news Historical Carnivals of Papier-Mâché Floats: Catalog cards published
The dedicated cards for the carnivals of Fano (lead), Acireale, Avola, Cento, Foiano della Chiana, Melilli, Putignano, San Giovanni in Persiceto, Sciacca, and Tempio Pausania are available online on the General Catalog of Cultural Heritage.
These cards were created as part of the project for the candidacy of the Historical Carnivals of papier-mâché floats as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, to inventory and catalog the heritage of knowledge, stories, and traditions passed down from generation to generation.
BIA coordinated and supervised this work with the collaboration of Dr. Sergio Straface, an accredited cataloging anthropologist at the ICCD, organizing field meetings and interviews with master float builders, papier-mâché artisans, and carnival organizers who, in a participatory and collaborative manner, identified the elements to be cataloged and shared their knowledge.
The initiative also involved the Central Institute for Cataloging and Documentation in identifying the census tool and the scientific coordination of cataloging activities, and the Central Institute for Intangible Heritage for the scientific verification of the produced cards.
